Hail Damaged Car in Alberta: Repair, Claim or Sell for Cash?
Ten minutes of hail can leave a car with hundreds of dents, a cracked windshield and a sunroof full of holes. Alberta gets more damaging hail than almost anywhere in Canada, and the storms that roll across central Alberta between June and August hit Edmonton driveways and parking lots as hard as anywhere else.
Once the storm passes, you have three real choices: claim it through insurance, pay for repairs yourself, or sell the car as it is. The right answer depends on your coverage, the car's value and how bad the damage is. This guide walks you through each option so you can make the call in a day instead of a month.
Do These Five Things in the First 24 Hours
- Photograph everything. Shoot every panel in daylight from a low angle, where dents show best. Include the roof, hood, trunk lid, glass and the inside of the car if water got in.
- Cover broken glass. Tape plastic over a smashed window or sunroof. Water in the cabin causes mould and electrical faults, and that damage costs more than the dents.
- Call your insurer or broker early. After a big storm, thousands of people file at once. Filing early gets you an earlier appraisal.
- Don't drive with a damaged windshield. A cracked windshield that blocks your view is a safety problem and can get you a ticket.
- Don't sign anything with a door-to-door dent crew yet. Get your insurer's appraisal first.
Does Insurance Cover Hail Damage in Alberta?
Only if you have the right coverage. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, hail damage to a vehicle is covered under comprehensive or all perils coverage. Collision coverage doesn't cover it, and neither does a basic liability-only policy.
Pull out your policy or call your broker and ask three questions:
- Do I have comprehensive or all perils coverage on this vehicle?
- What is my deductible for that coverage?
- Is glass covered, and does a rental or loaner come with the claim?
If your deductible is $500 or $1,000 and the damage is light, a claim may not be worth it. If the car has dozens of dents and broken glass, the claim will usually be far larger than the deductible.
A hail claim is not an at-fault accident, but ask your broker how it could affect your renewal before you decide.
Your Repair Options
Paintless dent repair (PDR)
A technician pushes each dent out from behind the panel with special tools. Because the factory paint stays intact, the repair is invisible when done well, and it costs much less than bodywork. Paintless dent repair in Edmonton works best when the paint isn't cracked, the dents are shallow and the technician can reach behind the panel. Aluminum hoods and roofs, sharp creases and dents along body lines are harder and cost more.
Conventional body repair
When dents are deep or the paint has cracked, panels need filling and repainting, or full replacement. Roofs are the expensive part: replacing a roof skin means cutting it out and welding or bonding in a new one, which adds days in the shop and a large labour bill.
Glass
Windshields, sunroofs and back glass are replaced, not repaired, once hail cracks them. On newer cars, a windshield replacement can also mean recalibrating the camera behind it for lane-keeping and emergency braking.
When Hail Damage Means a Write-Off
An insurer writes a car off when fixing it would cost more than the car is worth. That's why hail totals older cars so often. The Insurance Bureau of Canada used a simple example after the June 2020 Calgary hailstorm: an older, high-mileage car with $2,500 in hail damage can be written off if it would sell for less than $2,500. That storm alone produced about 70,000 insurance claims and more than $1.3 billion in insured damage.
If your car is written off, the insurer pays you its actual cash value, minus your deductible, and takes the car. Some insurers let you buy the car back for its salvage value. Think hard before you do that:
- In Alberta, a vehicle declared salvage by an insurer must pass a Salvage Vehicle Inspection at a licensed facility before it can be registered again. The inspection can take up to four hours, and repairs must follow manufacturer or I-CAR methods.
- Once it passes, the car's status changes to rebuilt permanently. Buyers see that on a Vehicle Information Report, and it lowers resale value for the life of the car.
Buying back a written-off car makes sense if you plan to drive it until it dies and the repairs are simple. It rarely makes sense if you plan to sell it in a year or two.
Repair, Claim or Sell: A Quick Decision Guide
| Your situation | Usually the best move |
|---|---|
| Newer car, comprehensive coverage, moderate dents | File a claim and let a shop do PDR |
| Light cosmetic dents, high deductible | Get a cash PDR quote, or drive it as is |
| Insurer writes it off | Take the payout. Buy back only if you'll keep it for years. |
| Older car, no comprehensive coverage, heavy damage | Sell it for cash as it is |
| Broken glass and water inside the cabin | Get repair quotes fast. If they're near the car's value, sell. |
| The car already had mechanical problems before the storm | Sell. Hail just made the repair math worse. |
What If You Don't Have Hail Coverage?
Many older cars in Edmonton are insured for liability only. Your options are:
- Drive it as is. If the glass and lights are intact, dents alone don't make a car unsafe.
- Pay for PDR on the worst panels. Fixing the hood and roof alone often makes a big visual difference for a fraction of a full repair.
- Sell it. If the repair quote is close to what the car is worth, or the car was already near the end of its life, selling stops the money drain.
Watch for Hidden Damage
Dents are the obvious damage. These problems show up weeks later:
- Damp carpets and a musty smell from water that came in through broken glass
- Electrical faults from water reaching wiring, modules or the fuse box
- Rust starting at chips where hail broke through the paint
- Cracked headlight and taillight housings that let moisture in
- Sensors and cameras that stop working after a windshield or bumper repair
Get any of these into your claim or repair quote now. They're much harder to claim later.
Selling a Hail Damaged Car: What It's Worth
A hail-damaged car is not a scrap car by default. If it runs well and only the body is damaged, its value comes from the engine, transmission and usable parts, not just the steel. What moves the price:
- Whether it runs. A running car with cosmetic damage is worth much more than one that doesn't. See how much difference it makes in our guide to running vs. non-running car value.
- Glass and interior condition. Intact glass and a dry interior raise the offer.
- Vehicle type. Trucks and SUVs hold their value, because their parts are always in demand around Edmonton.
- Status. A car with an active status is worth more than one already branded salvage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep the insurance payout and not fix the car?
If you own the car outright, many insurers pay you directly and leave the repair decision to you. If there's a loan or lease, the lender is usually named on the payment. Check your policy and ask your insurer before you cash anything.
Is paintless dent repair worth it on an older car?
It can be, if the car runs well and you plan to keep it. Get a written quote and compare it with what the car is worth. If the quote is more than half of the car's value, selling usually makes more sense.
Do you buy hail-damaged cars that insurance wrote off?
Yes, as long as you own the vehicle and have the paperwork. Tell us its status when you ask for a quote so the offer is accurate.
