How Much Is My Car Worth for Scrap in Edmonton? (2026 Guide by Model)

You’ve got a car that’s done. Maybe it never came back from the last cold snap, maybe the repair quote was more than the car, or maybe it’s just been sitting behind the garage long enough that you’ve stopped pretending you’ll fix it. Before you call anyone, you want one thing: a realistic idea of what it’s worth.

Most “junk car value” articles give you one giant range — “$200 to $5,000” — that tells you nothing. This guide is different. Below you’ll find typical scrap offers for the vehicles we actually buy most often in Edmonton, the simple maths behind every quote, and the handful of details that move your number more than anything else.

The Short Answer

Most complete, non-running passenger cars in Edmonton sell for scrap for roughly $250 to $900 in 2026. Minivans and crossovers usually land a bit higher. Half-ton pickups commonly bring $600 to $1,800, and heavy-duty diesel trucks can go well past that. If the vehicle still runs and drives, the offer can be considerably higher, because it’s no longer being priced as material alone.

Those are ranges, not promises. The rest of this page shows you exactly where your vehicle should sit inside them.

Scrap Values by Model: What Edmonton Sellers Typically Get

The table below covers the models that make up most of the end-of-life vehicles in this city. “Non-running” assumes the car is complete — engine, transmission, wheels and catalytic converter all still on it. “Running, high km” means it starts and drives but has major problems or very high mileage.

Older CR-Vs are one of the most frequently targeted vehicles for converter theft in Edmonton. If yours has been cut off, expect the lower end or below. See our guide on how the catalytic converter changes your offer.

How a Scrap Quote Is Actually Built

Every honest scrap offer is the sum of three things. Once you understand them, you can tell a fair quote from a lowball one in seconds.

1. The metal floor

Strip a vehicle down and what’s left is mostly steel, plus aluminum in the engine, wheels and some panels, and copper in the wiring. Recyclers buy that material by the tonne, so your vehicle’s weight puts a floor under the offer before anything else is considered. We explain the weight classes in detail on our cash for scrap cars page.

Here’s a simplified example of how the floor is calculated. Suppose a recycler is paying $200 per tonne for shredder steel. A Corolla weighing about 1.25 tonnes isn’t all recoverable steel — fluids, glass, plastics, rubber and fabric all come out first — so the useful steel might be closer to 0.9 tonnes. That puts the steel value around $180, before aluminum and copper are added. The steel price itself moves with global markets, so that number can shift month to month.

2. The catalytic converter

The converter contains platinum, palladium and rhodium — metals priced completely separately from steel. On some vehicles it’s worth more than all the steel combined. This is why two cars of the same size can get very different offers, and why a missing converter is the single biggest drop you’ll see in a quote.

3. Reusable parts

If your model is common, its parts have buyers: engines, transmissions, doors, tailgates, alternators, mirrors, wheels. A buyer who dismantles vehicles can recover that value, so they can pay you for it. This is where trucks and popular SUVs pull ahead — Edmonton has steady demand for F-150, Silverado and Ram parts, and that demand shows up in your offer.

A quote that only covers the metal floor is a scrap-yard price. A quote that includes the converter and parts value is a full-vehicle price. The gap is usually a few hundred dollars, and on trucks it can be much more.

Five Details That Move Your Number Most

Is everything still on it?

Completeness matters more than condition. A rough-looking car with its engine, transmission, wheels and converter intact is worth far more than a tidy one that’s been picked over. If you’ve already sold the battery or the wheels, mention it upfront.

Is the converter original?

Original (OEM) converters carry more precious metal than most aftermarket replacements. If yours was replaced with a cheap aftermarket unit, the value drops even though a converter is technically there.

Does it run — and how well?

“Runs and drives” and “turns over but won’t start” are completely different prices. On a popular truck or SUV, the gap between those two can run to several hundred dollars.

How bad is the rust?

Surface rust barely matters. Frame, rocker and subframe rust does, because it limits which parts can be resold. Years of calcium chloride on the Henday, Whitemud and Yellowhead do more damage underneath than most people realise.

Where is it sitting?

A car in an open driveway is a 20-minute job. A car buried in a snowbank in a narrow back alley, or three levels down in a downtown parkade, takes more time and equipment. A good buyer still includes free towing with no deductions — but they need to know the access to quote properly.

What Doesn’t Matter (Even Though Sellers Worry About It)

  • Hail damage and dents. Cosmetics don’t change the metal, converter or most parts value.
  • A dead battery. We winch vehicles that won’t start every day.
  • Flat tires or no keys. Skates and a flat deck handle both.
  • Mileage — on a true scrap vehicle. Once a car is priced as material, 180,000 km and 380,000 km pay almost the same.
  • Cleaning it. Don’t bother. Do empty it, though — anything left inside can’t be recovered once it’s processed.

Why Your Quote Might Be Different From This Guide

Market prices move. Steel, aluminum and precious-metal prices change independently, and parts demand changes with what’s on the road. A quote from last spring isn’t a quote today, in either direction.

Descriptions are sometimes optimistic. If a car is described as “complete” but turns out to be missing its engine, the number has to change. Volunteering the bad news early gets you an accurate quote that holds at pickup.

Some buyers quote high and deduct later. If an offer is far above everyone else’s, ask two questions: is towing included, and is this the final amount I’ll be paid? That’s usually where the difference disappears. We compare the main selling options honestly in junk yard vs cash for cars: who pays more in Edmonton.

How to Get the Highest Scrap Price in Edmonton

  • Don’t strip it first. Pulling the battery, wheels or converter usually costs you more in offer value than you’ll get selling them separately — and selling a loose converter now involves ID and ownership records under Alberta’s scrap metal rules.
  • Give the exact year, make, model and engine. A V8 truck and a V6 truck of the same year can have different converters and different parts value.
  • Be honest about what’s wrong and what’s missing. It’s the only way the quote stays firm.
  • Sell before another winter if you can. A car that sits through an Edmonton winter loses battery, seals, tires and often wiring to rodents — and some of its parts value with them.
  • Bundle vehicles. Two or three vehicles at one address make the trip more efficient, and that usually improves the per-vehicle number.
  • Have your paperwork ready. Photo ID and proof of ownership. If something’s missing, call before booking so we can tell you what’s needed.

Moving, Not Just Scrapping?

If you’re leaving the city, a car near the end of its life is rarely worth the cost of moving — selling it here first is usually cheaper. And if you’ve just arrived from another province and the car failed its Alberta out-of-province inspection, compare the repair quote with the values above before you spend anything on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a scrap car sell for in Edmonton?

Most complete non-running cars bring roughly $250 to $900 in 2026, minivans and crossovers a little more, and half-ton pickups commonly $600 to $1,800. Running vehicles and heavy-duty trucks can bring considerably more.

Why do trucks get more for scrap than cars?

They weigh roughly twice as much, their converters are often larger, and their parts are in constant demand across Alberta.

Is my car worth more if it still runs?

Usually, yes — sometimes by a lot. A running vehicle can be resold whole or tested for parts, which a seized one can’t.

Does a missing catalytic converter matter?

It’s the biggest single drop in most quotes. On some vehicles it removes a third or more of the value.

Can I get a quote without the VIN?

Yes. Year, make, model, engine and honest condition are enough for a firm number. The VIN is recorded at pickup.

Do scrap prices change during the year?

Yes. Metal markets move constantly. That’s why this guide is reviewed monthly and why any quote should be dated.
